Since then, I've been researching the health/chemical/environment connection and looking for better ways and products than the current ones. I look forward to talking with you.

What are your reasons for making the shift to a less toxic lifestyle?
It makes good sense to me on many levels: health, illness prevention and healing, sustainability, I don't like wasteful practices, respectful of the natural world and the resources we have.
I'd Consider Myself a ____________ when it comes to creating a less toxic home.
Been on the road a while and you can ask me about anything

Articles and Studies

Some Reading Material:

Article about Toxic Homes, Toxic Bodies and One Woman Living with MCS.

The Case for Precaution Article (This sums up a lot of what I think about the burden of proof.)

Study: Frequent use of household cleaners is associated with persistent wheezing in pre-school age children.

Article: Chemicals found in household cleaning products cause asthma in children, finds study
"Researchers found the most commonly used household chemicals included disinfectant and bleach - used by more than four in five mothers - and window cleaner, air fresheners and aerosols, found in two-thirds of homes.

Others included carpet cleaner and white spirit.

They found higher levels of VOCs in homes where there was greater use of products such as air fresheners and aerosols."

There was a link between higher exposure of expectant mothers to household chemicals for persistent wheezing in offspring, equivalent to a 41 per cent increase overall.

Lung function was also slightly worse among children of mothers with high exposure before birth.

Hi Lynn,

Thanks for connecting! Reminds me to spend more time in this lovely little Ning space.

I just got certified in EFL! Do you manage to teach from home? Online? I would LOVE to learn ways to set that up! Maybe you can send me some tips and resources? What are your needs and what can I do for you? It just feels so right for us to help each other, we canaries of the coal mine, the chemical soup of society! I am excited about life changing plans underway and to share them with my friends here and on Gaia, my other cyber home. And I am co-founding a NING site called PLay for All. (playforall.ning.com) Come on over and check it out!

Love,
mary

Hi Lynn

I just saw your comment from April 21. I think I missed it because I was on the road doing a show with Jack Canfield around that time. I would love to load some of my songs. If I forget, please do remind me. I'm busy these days recording my new CD but I will get around to loading the songs as soon as I can. :)

Lynn - Thanks for your reply, your compliments, and interest in why we choose to provide green lodging accommodations vs. conventional. Environmental responsibility is key, but like you, I became so seriously ill from the toxic environment I worked in that I spent the next year literally fighting for my life ('94). I had to leave a job I loved, made numerous emergency visits to the hospital and ended up having to take nine different medications to keep my airway open and health stable. It was a nightmare. Back then, doctors were mystified by the concept of a Sick Building Syndrome and had little information and the medical knowledge to treat patients suffering from the effects. Today, I am in relatively good health, but continue to surround myself and others with the healthiest environment and lifestyle I can. I am so pleased to meet you and hope to learn much from your research and acquired knowledge. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the link, Lynn - interesting timing. We'd just been struggling with getting rid of ants to no avail. Then my wife read that they don't like mint (which grows wild in our yard). She put some in a vase on our kitchen counter and voila! Not ant 1 to be found.

Hey, Mary! Well nice to meet you. I've been reading about your problems. I work online. I tried tutoring in person but it made me too sick. Books along with dryer sheets, smoke, everything that was on the clothing and it became too much. Yes, I stay home for the most part because I can reduce symptoms and be relatively ok if I avoid enough. When I go outside, it's carefully weighed and I need time to recover but I enjoy going out when I can. I'm sorry you're both going through this. Funny, I was wondering about "Keith's wife". You're not the only couple I know who are both sensitive to chems. My huz is not but very understanding and supportive.
